Founded in 2023, the Trillion Parameter Consortium (TPC) advances open and collaborative research on large-scale generative AI models (e.g., Foundation Models, Large Language Models) aimed broadly at advancing progress on scientific and engineering problems. As these models are expected to play an increasingly important role in scientific discovery, industry, and public services, the consortium aims to foster a global research effort dedicated to their development. Through coordinated collaboration among international partners, TPC seeks to build an open community of researchers that are interested in creating such state-of-the-art large-scale generative AI models.
EuroTPC's mission is to ensure that European expertise and values actively shape the next generation of trustworthy, open AI for science by:
- operating a European TPC Office at Barcelona Supercomputing Center
- aligning roadmaps across AI Factories and EuroHPC hosting entities
- supporting European participation in TPC working groups, workshops and events
- building international partnerships with TPC partners in the US, Japan and beyond.
LRZ's tasks in the project include:
- mapping the European AI-for-Science landscape by summarizing ongoing, upcoming, and planned initiatives that use large-scale generative AI for scientific research and applications
- assessing opportunities and gaps by identifying strengths, challenges, missing capabilities, and areas where Europe can further advance AI-for-Science development
- exploring collaboration potential across European scientific communities, AI Factories, research infrastructures, and relevant international partners
- integrating EuroTPC input and recommendations, including proposed European-level research actions related to the TPC
- developing a roadmap through an iterative expert-driven process involving EuroTPC consortium members, European AI Factory experts, and scientific domain communities to validate priorities and recommendations.
