Experience research and cutting-edge computer technology firsthand: The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) will be showcasing its work at the FORSCHA hands-on science fair, taking place from July 17 to 19, 2026, at the FORUM Schwanthalerhöhe in Munich. Together with partners such as Munich Quantum Valley, the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology, and the PhotonLab at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, the LRZ offers kids and teens insights into the world of data centres, supercomputing, and quantum computing.
At the booth, kids and their parents can get hands-on and discover in a playful way how the latest supercomputers work: for example, by taking apart a PC and breaking it down into its individual components to understand how it functions. They can also see how a supercomputer works together with a quantum computer or artificial intelligence. Craft and painting activities show what's happening in the world of IT.
A special highlight is the virtual reality station, where participants can use a 3D headset to truly immerse themselves inside a quantum computer. The selfie photo wall with research props enables role-playing and promotes the idea that a future in science and IT can be fun.
The LRZ and its booth partners aim to make their activities in high- and extreme-performance computing, quantum computing, and the application of artificial intelligence understandable and tangible for children. At the same time, they demonstrate the vital role that computing and data centres play in advancing scientific research and driving innovation for society.
