Open House at the LRZ: From super to quantum computing and virtual worlds

For more than 60 years, the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) has stood for powerful supercomputers and reliable IT services for science. On 3 October 2023, we will open our doors at the Garching Research Centre and show not only our famous SuperMUC-NG, which has some 311,040 computing nodes and is one of the fastest supercomputers in Europe, but also other high-performance systems. You can discover our first quantum computer, take a look at the LRZ's huge storage facilities and data libraries, and get to know powerful AI systems.

Use all your senses in the LRZ’s cinema to experience what researchers compute with these technologies. See stunning simulations and impressive visualisations in 3D, which show our universe, the human organism, tiny primordial animals and the origin of the world. Also, the Centre for Visualisation and Virtual Reality, V2C, takes its visitors to three-dimensional online worlds where digital art treasures and a digital version of the SuperMUC-NG can be discovered.

Let's take a look at supercomputers

Young and old visitors are welcome when the LRZ’s doors open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on “Mouse Day”. We offer various guided tours:

  • Guided tours for children in the computer cube, where supercomputers & Co are located - followed by a scavenger hunt about searching and finding on the Internet
  • Guided tours for adults in the computer cube in German and in English
  • Guided tours at the Centre for Virtual Reality and Visualization (V2C). These tours are suitable for children from 5 years and adults alike. An English guided tour is also available here.

Registration is required for the tours. Click here for the forms.

Play, see and wonder

Those who are not registered may have to wait a while for a free place. But waiting times can be easily bridged in the LRZ lobby and the adjoining rooms: The LRZ has a lot of exciting things and topics for you to discover besides computers. Let's go!

Together with partner organisations such as the Open Search Foundation (OSF), which is committed to creating new Internet search services and improving transparency and data protection, we have also put together a varied and exciting programme designed for children and adults who want to play, see and wonder:

  • Discover educational research projects on the virtual human, on the measurement of our universe, on the history of the planet or on rainy weather patterns in Bavaria.
  • Paint or build your supercomputer with Lego and let Felix on KiKA tell you how supercomputing works and how research data becomes visible.
  • Build a quantum computer and find out how it works.
  • Look for secrets in the LRZ and find out why Google, Bing and other search engines know so much about us.
  • Discuss why personal data needs to be protected.
  • Discover how easy it is to keep yourself safe online.

Doors open at the Research Campus Garching on “Mouse Day”.

The LRZ is not the only research institute that lets children and adults look behind the scenes and experiment. Here's even more to see, learn and understand.

  • e-conversion: Everything related to energy and the power supply of the future
  • Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST): Testing quantum technologies
  • Munich Cluster for Systems Neurology (SyNergy): The interaction of muscles and nerves
  • ORIGINS: From the Big Bang to the origin of life
  • Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ): Experimenting with optical quantum technologies
  • Munich Quantum Valley: Getting to know quantum computing
  • Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (FRM II): Say hello to the neutrons
  • Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering (MIBE): Discover new health technologies
  • TUM School of Natural Sciences: Experiment, calculate and discover physics
