Girls Day am LRZ
Am 14. April 2011 beteiligte sich das LRZ am diesjährigen Girls' Day.
19 Mädchen aus 13 Schulen im Alter von 11 bis 16 Jahren übten sich unter Anleitung von LRZ-Mitarbeiterinnen im Aufbau von HP-Switches und im Erstellen von Webseiten. Eine kurze Führung durch den Rechnerwürfel und eine Demonstration unserer Holobench rundeten den Tag ab.

NGI-DE Jahrestagung / European Globus Community Forum (EGCF)
Vom 18.-20. Mai 2011 findet am LRZ in Garching die Jahrestagung der deutschen nationalen Grid-Initiative (NGI-DE) statt, zu der wir Sie gerne einladen möchten. Neben Workshops verschiedener Arbeitskreise aus D-Grid am 19./20.Mai (u.a. zu den Themen Security, Monitoring, Accounting und Portale) findet am 18./19. Mai die erste Tagung des European Globus Community Forum (EGCF) statt.
Diese Veranstaltung gibt interessierten Nutzern und Entwicklern des Globus Toolkits nicht nur die Möglichkeit, sich über den aktuellen Stand der Globus Software sowie über Möglichkeiten zu informieren, wie die Initiative for Globus in Europe (IGE) Wissenschaftlern behilflich sein kann, Ressourcen der europäischen verteilten Computing-Infrastrukturen (DCI) für ihre Forschung effizient zu nutzen, sondern bietet auch die einmalige Gelegenheit, aktiv am Aufbau der Globus-Community in Europa mitzuwirken. Das ist Ihre Chance, mit anderen europäischen Globus-Nutzern und -Entwicklern in Kontakt zu treten, sich kennen zu lernen und Erfahrungen auszutauschen, wie Ihre Kollegen Globus einsetzen, um ihre wissenschaftlichen Projekte voranzutreiben. Als Keynote-Speaker konnten Steve Tuecke, Leiter der Globus-Entwicklung an der University Chicago, sowie Steven Newhouse, Direktor der European Grid Infrastructure (EGI.eu) gewonnen werden.
EGCF ist ein integraler Teil des IGE-Projekts (http://www.ige-project.eu), welches den Support für Globus in Europa koordiniert - auf diese Art wird die Stimme der Nutzer nicht nur im Projekt selbst gehört, sondern auch gegenüber dem Globus-Entwickler-Team in den USA verstärkt. Somit birgt es die großartige Gelegenheit, einen community-zentrischen, wissenschafts-getriebenen Blick dadurch einzubringen, dass Anforderungen geliefert, Features angefragt und best practices diskutiert werden.
Auf der Webseite http://go.ige-project.eu/egcf1 werden in den nächsten Tagen aktuelle Informationen über die Tagung, die Agenda und über EGCF als Gremium für Globus-Kunden im Allgemeinen zur Verfügung stehen. Bitte verbreiten Sie diese Informationen auch in Ihrer Community, um allen Wissenschaftlern zu helfen, die europäischen Computing-Infrastrukturen noch effektiver zu nutzen.

DEISA European-US Summer School on HPC Challenges
DEISA, Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications, has just announced the second EU/US summer school in computational sciences, to take place from Aug 7-12 at Lake Tahoe, California.

Participation/stay is free of charge, travel funds will be provided by DEISA/PRACE.
The NSF grant is aiming for 60 students, 35 from the US and 25 from Europe (just inverse to the summer school 2010 in Catania).
Applications are all through the US web page. The EU selection will be done by a committee already set up by DEISA and PRACE from six countries.
Training: Intel Array Building Blocks (ArBB)
LRZ offers a training on Array Building Blocks (ArBB), Intel's latest solution for high-level parallel programming. The training takes place at the LRZ building on May 11/12, 2011 and is free of charge. ArBB allows application developers to concentrate on the implementation of their scientific code instead of dealing with low-level issues like extracting parallelisms or optimizing performance for a certain hardware architecture. It allows to produce scalable and portable parallel implementations from a single high-level, maintainable, and application-oriented implementation.
LRZ has evaluated ArBB (as successor of RapidMind) for more than 6 months. Since evaluation results are convincing, we would like to welcome you to learn more about this new programming language based on C++. Hans Pabst, Software Engineer and Technical Consultant at Intel, will explain the philosophy of ArBB, introduce the syntax and key features like ArBB data collections or its operators for data processing.
The lectures are complemented by hands-on parts which will allow people to gain practical experience with the programming model and performance analysis of ArBB code with VTune. Participants are invited to continue the practical parts with own pieces of code. The tutorial will also give an overview of the different technologies and parallel programming models supported by Intel products, and how to mix and match these products.

PRACE-Calls: Third Regular Call, Synchronized DECI Call, Preparatory Access Call
The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) allows researchers from across Europe to apply for time on high-performance computers from a series of hosting nations via a central peer review process.
Calls for proposals for computer time on PRACE machines are issued regularly on the Prace Website http://www.prace-ri.eu/Calls-for-Proposals .
Third Regular Call for Tier-0 and synchronized Pilot Call for Tier-1 (DECI)
Tier-0 machines available in the Third Regular Call:
IBM Blue Gene/P "JUGENE"(GCS@Jülich, Germany) BULL Bullx cluster "CURIE" (GENCI@CEA, France) Cray XE6 "HERMIT" (GCS@HLRS, Germany).
Tier-1 HPC systems available in the Pilot DECI-Call from:
Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands and UK.
(DECI stands for "Distributed European Computing Initiative")
The call for Tier-0 and Tier-1 is currently open and will close on June 22 2011, 16:00 CEST.
Successful projects will start 1. November 2011 and will run until 31. October 2012.
Preparatory Access Call for Tier-0
Preparatory access is intended for testing and developing codes in order to prepare applications for PRACE Tier-0 project access.
The Preparatory Access Call is a rolling call, researchers can apply for resources all year. There are no closing dates, proposals will be reviewed every second month. The next cutoff date is May 5 2011.
The criteria for the PRACE Regular call and the PRACE Preparatory Access Call as well as complete information on the PRACE machines, how to apply for the Calls and on the PRACE peer review process can be found at http://www.prace-ri.eu/ .

HPC Administration Personnel
The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (Leibniz-Rechenzentrum, LRZ) is part of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, BADW). LRZ is a central site for large scale data archiving and backup. It is an active player in the area of high performance computing for over 20 years and provides computing power on several different levels. It offers its services to universities in Germany and to publicly funded research institutions, like Max-Planck and Helmholtz Institutes.
For the system administration of the new supercomputer (SuperMUC) the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching (Munich) is looking for
a scientific staff member (university post graduate degree; master’s degree or equivalent)
The position is available immediately. Applications will be accepted until May 15th, 2011.
The SuperMUC hardware based on the Intel Xeon-Architecture will consist of more than 110,000 cores and will provide a peak performance of about 3 Petaflop/s (=10^15 FLOPS). The main memory will be larger than 320 Terabyte accompanied with 12 Petabyte hard disk space. The system will use around 14,000 Intel Xeon processors incorporated in thousands of most up-to-date IBM iDataPlex servers.
SuperMUC will also use a new revolutionary form of high temperature cooling developed by IBM at the ETH Zürich with the prototype system Aquasar.
You will contribute to European HPC research projects and will be working in this multifaceted field on a variety of system administration and operation related tasks aimed at achieving outstanding results. In particular, you will take responsibility for some of the following tasks:
- conceptual work on the installation and operation of one of the largest HPC clusters in Europe;
- scouting new technologies and development, focusing on system management of large compute clusters;
- administering and monitoring cluster resources, installation of system software and configuration management;
- installation of system software;
- writing reports, and documentation (primarily in English);
- supporting users executing HPC projects;
- programming in Python, Perl, shell scripting.
You should have the following qualifications:
- a university post graduate degree; master’s degree or equivalent in a scientifically oriented subject (computer science, mathematics, physics, etc.) with an above average GPA;
- experience with the system administration of UNIX/Linux based systems;
- programming knowledge with shell and scripting languages (Perl, Python, etc.) and a high level programming language (C, C++, or Java);
- good speaking and writing skills in English a basic knowledge of the German language;
- initiative, capacity for teamwork, and creativity.
Due to its state-of-the-art computing facilities and its proximity to the Munich universities, LRZ offers a very stimulating and innovative environment. Progressive policies such as flexible working hours support the combination of work and family life.

Durch den doppelten Abiturjahrgang und den Wegfall der Wehrpflicht werden ab 2011 deutlich mehr Studenten und in der Folge auch mehr Mitarbeiter, Gebäude und damit auch neue Netze und Netzkomponenten benötigt. An diesem weiteren Ausbau des Münchner Wissenschaftsnetzes arbeiten Sie im Rahmen des Projektes mit.

Required experience and skills

Kundenbetreuung Virtualisierung
Das Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ) ist gemeinsames Rechenzentrum der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, der Technischen Universität München sowie der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Das LRZ betreibt ein Virtualisierungs-Cluster auf Basis von VMware vSphere mit mehr als 100 physischen Blades und knapp 1000 virtuellen Maschinen mit stark zunehmender Anzahl.
Für die Betreuung unserer Kunden und den Betrieb des Virtualisierungs-Clusters sucht die Gruppe Compute Server des Leibniz-Rechenzentrums ab sofort
zwei Mitarbeiter(innen)
mit abgeschlossener Berufsausbildung im Bereich Informatik oder einem Fachhochschulabschluss in Informatik, bzw. einem naturwissenschaftlich-technisch orientierten Studiengang.
Die Einstellung erfolgt zunächst befristet auf zwei Jahre und kann sofort besetzt werden. Die Vergütung erfolgt nach TV-L. Schwerbehinderte werden bei gleicher Eignung bevorzugt.
Es erwarten Sie vielseitige Aufgaben, die Sie selbstständig in einem kollegialen Team erledigen. Dabei werden Sie eng mit den Gruppen für den Linux und Windows Serverbetrieb des LRZ zusammenarbeiten.
