Abstract:

Cymbidieae (Epidendroideae), with ca. 3000 species distributed in tropical regions, is one of the most diverse orchid tribes. Recent progress on sequencing thecnologies and phylogenetic studies on several members of the Cymbidieae provide a suitable research framework on the biogeography and evolution of this charismatic lineage. By integrating up to dated phylogenetic and biogeographic approaches, we aim to investigate the relevance of biogeographical events (e.g. disperal, vicariance, range extinction) linked with orogenic and climate events that have shaped clade evolution between the Cymbidiae. Nevertheless, due to the size of the dataset hereby analyzed (phylogenetic trees and alignments of five genes with ca. 900 sequences - the biggest assembled phylogenetic tree ever), access to a solid computation facility is manadatory. In additionl, many of the approaches here used (e.g. ancestral area estimation in R), are not yet implemented in the public available super computer clusters (e.g. CIPRES).
