The project "CFD investigation of transonic flow of complex fluids" can be divided into two sub projects. The first sub project focuses on the dynamics of cavitating flows. Here, unsteady flows in injections systems and around hydrofoils like ship propellers are investigated. Very small Mach numbers M<<1 occur in the liquid phase while high Mach numbers around M>>1 occur in the vapor phase. The focus of this work is modeling of cavitating flows with turbulence and wave dynamics and the numerical prediction of areas that are sensitive to cavitation erosion. The second sub project focuses on gasdynamically produced nano-particles. It is part of the joint project PAK75 of DFG. Here, a novel process for the production of gas-phase synthesized particles is developed. The key features of the process are shock-induced precursor combustion, homogeneous particle growth at constant thermodynamic conditions and gas-dynamic nozzle quenching within a double choked Laval nozzle system.
