State-of-the-art integrated land use/transport models apply microsimulation approaches that simulate demographics and travel behavior of individuals. To model demographic change, transition probabilities are applied for getting married, having a child, etc. Every event has an impact on the overall household size distribution. It has turned out to be extremely difficult to ensure that the distribution of household sizes is reasonable after several simulation periods. In practice, scientists run these models many, many times and manually adjust probabilities for demographic events. Other distributions, such as age, sex or household composition are commonly neglected entirely. In this project, we will apply machine learning techniques to automatically adjust demographic transition parameters to achieve reasonable distributions across multiple household attributes. Upon successful implementation, we will transfer the method to travel behavior analyses as well.
