Abstract
There have been great advances in the optimization of large scale high performance particle in cell codes. Unfortunately the underlying algorithms are often outdated from a numerical point of view.The new GEMPIC framework using a Hamiltonian splitting for the Vlasov--Maxwell equation is a promising candidate to add crucial conservation laws to existing codes. Therefore we evaluate the performance portable PICONGPU written in C++ and more user friendly P-I-C-S-A-R coded in fortran and python for their suitability for new algorithm implementation.
