In order to enhance energy security and environmental sustainability, there is an increasing demand in reliable alternatives to conventional fuel. In this context the DLR Institute of Combustion Technology investigates the effects of the chemical composition of different fuels on the combustion characteristics as for example the flame structure, the emissions of pollutants and the flame stability. The investigation comprises certified bio-fuels and synthetic fuels. The authors identified the coupling of the evaporation model in the Lagrangian framework with the chemistry solver for the chemical kinetics in the Eulerian framework as crucial factor for accurate simulations. The project proposal at hand is deduced from this fact and focuses on the development of such a coupling. Subsequently, detailed numerical simula-tions of alternative aviation fuels being a complex multi-component mixture will be per-formed. The simulations will be accompanied by measurements in the framework of the Horizon 2020 EU project JETSCREEN (partners and collaborators : Airbus, CERFACS, IFPEN, MTU, Manchester Metropolitan University, ONERA, Politecnico de Milano, SAFRAN, SAFRAN Aircraft Engines, University of Sheffield, ZODIAC, Rolls-Royce), the DLR internal project ECLIF (partners and collaborators: NASA, Sasol, University of Innsbruck), and the Helmholtz project SynKWS.
