Abstract
Aim of the present project is the definition of a simulation database of boundary-layer flows on the wind-ward side of a generic capsule geometry under different chemical conditions (ideal gas, chemical/thermal equilibrium as well as non-equilibrium), and the successive investigation of the influence of these conditions on the stability properties of the boundary layer. Transition on the capsule will be analysed both as a consequence of roughness and under the influence of a noisy wind-tunnel environment. In this regard, roughness represents the surface imperfections arising because of the ablative process of the capsule surface. Instead, investigations on the effects of the wind-tunnel noise allow for a direct comparison with experimental data. Correlation between wind-tunnel results and free- flight conditions will also be object of the present study.Validation of the numerical results will be conducted through comparison with experimental results from the hypersonic Ludwieg tube at the Technische Universität Braunschweig. The analysis of transition for the simulated high-enthalpy flows will be related with the investigations on the cold flow conducted by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). To facilitate the exchange of results, the base flow for the stability analysis will be computed on a numerical grid developed at DLR.
