Abstract
In order to enhance energy security and environmental sustainability, there is an increasingdemand in reliable alternatives to conventional fuel. In this context the DLR Institute ofCombustion Technology investigates the effects of the chemical composition of differentfuels on the combustion characteristics as for example the flame structure and the emissionsof pollutants. The investigation comprises certified bio-fuels and synthetic fuels.The authors identified the coupling of the evaporation model in the Lagrangian frameworkwith the chemistry solver for the chemical kinetics in the Eulerian framework as crucial factorfor accurate simulations. The project proposal at hand is deduced from this fact and focuseson the development of such a coupling. Subsequently, detailed numerical simulations ofalternative aviation fuels being a complex multi-component mixture will be performed. Thesimulations will be accompanied by measurements in the framework of the DLR internalproject ECLIF (partners and collaborators: NASA, Sasol, University of Innsbruck) and theLUFO V project Innotreib.
