Abstract
We plan a new research program based on large-scale simulations of neutron star mergers in general relativity. The ultimate goal is to model the astrophysics of neutron star binaries and to support the emerging field of gravitational wave astronomy with the necessary theoretical investigations. During the last five years our group has reached a leading role in numerical relativity of neutron stars and gravitational waves. Because of major progress in the construction of binaries with spin,eccentricity, and high mass ratios, our collaboration is now in a unique position to simulate, for the first time, a significant part of the possible binary configurations. For the evolutions, amature, state-of-the-art numerical relativity code is available that implements adaptive mesh refinement, multipatch grids, and high-order finite differences including high-resolution shockcapturing.
