The Hellmuth Fischer Symposium, which has been held every three years since 1979, is devoted to Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Hellmuth Fischer, an internationally acknowledged scientist in memory of his scientific work as industrial researcher and famous electrochemist. From 1949 – 1950 he was head of the research and development laboratories of Siemens & Halske AG, Berlin, Heidenheim, Karlsruhe and Munich, where he was deeply engaged in the development of the Beryllium chemistry and the synthesis of pure Silicon. In 1950 he became extraordinary Professor at TU Berlin and from 1951 ordinary Professor and Director of the Electrochemistry Department of the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry at the University of Karlsruhe where he retired in 1970. His scientific contributions as electrochemist mainly refer to the fields of corrosion inhibition and to electrolytic deposition and electrocrystallization of metals. His book "Elektrolytische Abscheidung und Elektrokristallisation von Metallen" is still a valuable source for electrochemists working in this area.

In honour of his scientific work the Hellmuth Fischer Medal Award was introduced by DECHEMA in 1989 on top of the Hellmuth Fischer Symposium. The medal has been foreseen primarily to younger scientists for work that has contributed towards extending or deepening the fundamentals of electrochemistry, corrosion or corrosion protection, or towards their industrial application. Previous medallists were

Prof. Ulrich Stimming, New York, in 1989

Prof. Klaus-Michael Jüttner, Frankfurt am Main, in 1991

Prof. Roger Charles Newman, Manchester, in 1994

Prof. Philippe Allongue, Paris, in 1997

Prof. Reginald Penner, Irvine USA, in 2000

Prof. Nongjian Tao, Tempe USA, in 2003

Dr. Anthony Kucernak, Imperial College London, UK, in 2006

Prof. K. Andreas Friedrich, Stuttgart, was awarded the Hellmuth Fischer Medal in 2009.
