GerMUN 2004 -
27 Feb. - 1 March, Weimar
The German Model United Nations (GerMUN) is an annual meeting of more than one hundred students from several German Universities.
GerMUN is a real-life simlation of the most important bodies of the United Nations, and therefore part of a globally
mushrooming discipline of applied international relations.
Only MUN-experienced students and Faculty Advisors have been preparing GerMUN. It is thus not only the simulation with the longest tradition in
Germany, but also one of the most challenging academic simulations in Europe. Many Delegates usually use GerMUN as a chance for practice before
attending the annual National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference in New
York City. Not only for this purpose the Conference has always been held in English.
The GerMUN Conference 2003 was held in the "Akademie der Bundeswehr für Information und Kommunikation" in Strausberg near Berlin in early March.
This year, more than 180 students have registered. The organizers have therefore extended the number of committees to four: The
Security Council (SC), the General Assembly
(GA), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
and the non-United Nations body African Union (AU).
Each committee has three topics to discuss. In the beginning, Delegates have to decide on the Agenda. At GerMUN, the
rules are based on the Rules of Procedure at the NMUN and on a short form for easy looking-up (all Delegates will be provided with a copy at the
beginning of the meeting). At the end of each topic, there will be Resolutions to vote upon. The process of discussions is based on formal
debate in regular session and on informal caucus. In general, the Rules of Procedure differ only slightly from the ones the “real” diplomats are
confronted with.
This years' GerMUN Conference is organized by the Project Group of the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München with additional preparational help
from the Universität Erfurt and Magdeburg. The Conference Management is glad to host this years` session at the
Europäische Jugendbildungs- und
Jugendbegegnungsstätte in Weimar.
Very special thanks go to the Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung, Landesbüro Thüringen, and to the
Robert-Bosch-Stiftung for their support.
