Museology and Audience


The International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM) will be holding its 2005 annual conference at The Nickle Arts Museum at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta Canada. ICOFOM is one of the twenty-nine international committees of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) a UNESCO body. This will be a three day conference beginning on Thursday June 30, 2005 and concluding on Saturday July 2, 2005.

The theme of the 2005 conference will be Museology and Audience. Conference workshop topics will be related to issues raised in the book “Learning from Museums: Visitor Experience and the Making of Meaning” by John H. Falk and Lynn D. Dierking. Discussions will cover inquiry in three major areas: 1. The theoretical aspects of how visitors find and construct meaning in museums. 2. The critical analysis of how museums subdivide audience groups. 3. Questions about particular social groups that are not traditionally patrons of museums. Papers are due by May 15 at the latest.

Unconfirmed conference speakers will include Robert Janes, and Duncan Cameron, both notable authors in the area of museology and former directors of Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. Conference activities will include daily trips to Calgary museums as well as tours of museums located in Banff National Park in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The cost for conference registration is $175.00 for registration before May 15, and $225.00 after May 15. There is a special rate of $30.00 for students.
