Institute

General links to institutions which are related to the KfG

The CfG is based at the Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Bavarian Academy for Sciences and Humanities). At the academy there are many other commissions, working on a wide variety of topics. You will find information about these various research areas on the homepage of the BAdW www.badw.de.

The head organisation of all seven "Deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften" (German Academies of Sciences and Humanities) is based in Mainz as Union der Deutschen Akademien (Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities). You can find information about all "Akademien der Wissenschaften" and the programm on the homepage www.Akademienunion.de.

The famous climbers village Vent (Tirol) is the place of departure for alpine tours into the Vernagtferner area. Vent introduces itself with an own web presence www.vent.at, which is aranged very informative (in german only).

Weather

Links for weather news in the Alps

The likely best and completest offer for really latest information on weather and climate data, as well as information on longterm weather outlook comes from WWW.WeatherOnline.co.uk. Maps of temperature, precipitation a.s.o. were designed clearly for the European area and worl wide, but also the alpine region ist covered very well. Forcast maps are available over periods up to more than 14 days.

Meanwile the offer by WWW.Wetter.com has a similar completeness, but partly with more colorful graphics. There you can find an apparent detailled forcast of the village of Vent.

Meteoblue-MPEG Since some years ago the University of Basel offers a beautiful visualisation of the results of forecast models for the european and overseas region. Since 2007 an innovative Service is offered ob commercial base under the label WWW.Meteoblue.ch. Beside a lot of parameters and local forecasts there are also presented meteograms for selected locations. A meteogram show the expected weather pattern for the next three or more days interms of timeseries of common meteorological parameters like e.g. temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation and cloud cover. But the location matches only to the models grid-point,which depends on the DTM-resolution. Usefully examples are Munich or Innsbruck.

A similar visualisation project is offered bei the FU Berlin on its web page www.Terra3D.de.

The Meteorological Institute of the University of Munich offers many useful services for short- or medium-term weather forecasts, but most are inaccessible to servers from outside. In contrast the extensive measurement data of the meteorological stations Garching, Munich (city-center) and Zugspitze (Schneefernerhaus) are accessable online. Click here to the Hompage of the MIM and look for the topic Weather.

Daily updated information about the weather conditions in the Alps ( in German) can be found also at the Deutsche Alpenverein (German Alpine Club) website.

You may find realtime images from panoramic cameras at a lot of locations of Austria at www.TisCover.at.

For obtaining the current weather situation in the region of the Vernagtferners take a look at the Hochjochferner. Since October 2000 there is a Webcam with a panorama view available, which updates a chart every 15 minutes. The panorama spans from the Weisskugel, Wildspitze and the Venter Valley up to the Schnalstal. You can find the pictures under www.Schnalstal.com.

The Vernagtferner basin drains into the Rofenache stream. The Tirol goverment offers the actual water level of the Rofenache via www for free. You may find a continously refreshed graphics of the Level of gauge of Vent at www.tirol.gv.at. Additional you can find more values of gauges at the Inn river and its feeders.

Impressions about the current weather of the Zugspitze liefert die Bayerische Zugspitzbahn. Quite recently two cameras have been installed at the summit and one with a view of the southern Schneeferner from the Sonnalpin. Another camera is installed at the environmental research station Schneefernerhaus. An overview of the Zugspitze north face is obtainable from the Wank summit station.

3D-Bilder

To pages with 3d-pictures from the Alps

You can find excellent 3D-anaglyphic images and panoramic images of the Morteratsch-glacier in Swizzerland at the website www.swisseduc.ch .

Excellent colour anaglyphic pictures of the French Alps can be found too on the homepage of  Pierre Gidon (Alpes_Stereo). These pages are partly in English and partly in French.

Information about high mountain cartography can be found on the can be found on the homepage of the Institute for cartography at the TU-Dresden.

A lot of work in the field of glaciology and polar research is done at the Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI) at Bremerhaven. The AWI-homepage is found under www.awi.de.

The Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics at the Innsbruck University (IMGI) works on similar problems as the KfG. The IMGI-homepage can be found here.

Glaceriological research work is done also at the Versuchsanstalt für Wasserbau, Hydrologie und Glaziologie (VAW) of the ETH Zürich. The homepage of the VAW can be found at the adress www.Glaziologie.ethz.ch.

For completion of the activities in the region of the Fedtschenko glacier in the Pamir range you find very beautiful impressions and large panoramas on the homepage of M. Hauser. It’s worth looking at the site if you are interested in the area. The website can be found under www.pamir-adventure.com/pamirmountains.

A detailed and nice dictionary with glaciological terms is found at the site of  NSIDC ("All about Glaciers...").

The International Commission for the Protection of the Alps CIPRA offers at the webadress www.cipra.org an information service concerning the Alps.
