As part of the work at CfG a number of tools have been developed (technical equipment, methods, software etc.) which facilitate research work on glaciers, or even make the work generally possible. Developments of this kind are presented on this site in form of “technical notes”, so that they can be beneficial for other glaciologists as well.

The first presentation (in German) is that of a portable steam driven ice drill developed at the KfG. It is suitable for drilling holes in ice and firn and is already used worldwide.
