Institute of Medieval Canon Law Current Projects
In accordance with our goal of promoting the a deeper understanding and also a more widespread knowledge of Medieval Canon Law, the Institute is currently supporting the following projects:
After many years of preliminary work by A. De Groot, further work was made possible with support of the Free State of Bavaria and carried out by R. Sorice in Munich, Leipzig and Troyes. De Groot's provisional edition was produced in 1996; the version prepared by R. Sorice for the MIC was published in Rome in the beginning of 2003 as MIC, A, 4.
Edition by G. Motta und G. Picasso, book 1 and 2 available: Joseph Motta, Collectio canonum trium librorum, pars prior, Liber I et II, MIC, B, 8, Roma 2005. Book 3 is still in preparation.
Here again the support of the State of Bavaria made possible the continuation, by O. Condorelli, of the preliminary work done under the direction of U. Prerovsky. O. Condorelli proofread the text of the first 18 Distinctiones which was then checked by R. Weigand and P. Landau using the notes made by F. Gillmann. This text is ready to go to press as the first volume of an edition in the MIC series.
The work begun by Rudolf Weigand and his team is being continued and brought to completion under the direction of P. Landau and Stephan Haering. Under the sponsorship of the DFG, the group, Waltraud Kozur, Karin Miethaner-Vent and Martin Petzold, have been working continously to prepare these enormous texts for publishing. The first volume, Pars I and Causa 1 (Fotos-word.doc) of Honorius' Summa Decretorum is already available (MIC A 5, Rom 2004). The next volume being prepared for the publisher is Pars I of the Summa Lipsiensis.
The next to follow are: Pars
II of the Summa Decretorum
Vol.2 (Causae 2-22), and Vol.3 (Causae 27-36) and of the
Summa Lipsiensis, Vol. 2 and 3 (Causae 1-36) and 4 (‚De consecratione’)
and Distinctio 1 and 2 of the Summa Quaestionis are still in preparation
Vol. 1, (Distinctio 1), Vol. 2, (Distinctio 2 and Distinctio 3 ‚De iure
naturali’); Distinctio 3 (Law of Marriage) was published in B. Grimm, Die Ehelehre des Magister Honorius,
Studia Gratiana 24, Rome 1989.
Of the planned third volume - the first two volumes have already been published in co-operation with the DHI Rome - there exists a rough version which was drawn up in Berkeley. The continuation is a rather complicated project because of the departure of the previous editors and the relocation of the Institute from Berkeley to Munich. With information supplied by M. Bertram, Rome, as well as data rescued from Berkeley, G. Dolezalek, Leipzig/Aberdeen, was able to make a preliminary assessment of the project materials on site in Rome. Currently the project can be worked only on sporadically due to the lack of resources. As a preliminary stage of the work and an aid to future efforts on the project, G. Dolezalek and a team are working to build up a database of the manuscripts. Work on the fourth volume and the index will begin only when the third volume is actually in publication.
Based on the preparatory work of W. Holtzmann,a preliminary version of the index is being prepared by S. Chodorow. An Internet version is to follow.
In continuation of the work Walther Holtzmann began for the Pius-Foundation efforts contine on the index of the Twelfth-Century Decretal.Gisela Drossbach had completed the digitalisation of Holtzmann's card file as first step toward a future electronic edition to be produced in cooperation with the MGH and the Bavrian State Library, Munich. Birgit Gilcher has made this work-in-progress version accessible via the internet with the assistance of the Bavarian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Munich. Link here.
G. Drossbach is working on an edition of the Francofortana in continuation of the preliminary work of W. Holtzmann and Peter Landau. The second draft of the manuscript has been completed and is being proofread in preparation for publication.
The library of the Stephan Kuttner Institute of Medieval Canon Law has Kuttner's extensive Collection of scholarly off-prints as well as his scholarly correspondence. A data base of these titles is now available at the Institute thanks to the efforts of Birgit Gilcher and Johannes Raue, and as soon finances permit, the database will be accessible via the Internet.
The preparation of a Register of Kuttner's scholarly correspondence has also been completed through the efforts of Andreas Hetzenecker. A catalogue of the correspondence are available at the institute. If there is sufficient demand, an index will be prepared for this work. Also, Andreas Hetzenecker has written a preliminary evaluation of the correspondence that is scheduled to appear in monograph form in the near future.
These projects have been carried out with the aid of scholars from all over Europe and the United Staes. Preliminary work has been published and discussed in the form of research reports and general surveys.
