The usage of the services offered by the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum is regulated by the "Usage regulations for the information processing systems of the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities" dated December 17th, 1996. As a supplement to these usage regulations, the following operating rules, each related to the sections indicated, have been applied:

  1. Allocation of IDs for LRZ systems (§3, item 3)

As a rule, authorization for the usage of LRZ systems requiring personal user IDs is not issued directly to the user by the LRZ, but by the IP-administrator ("Master User") of an institution. This requires, as a formal framework, an LRZ project that must be applied for by the appropriate director of the institution, using the form "Antrag auf ein LRZ-Projekt" ("Project Application").
The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and the Technische Universität München provide authorization for modem and Internet usage for their own students. Students of other institutions receive authorization directly from the LRZ.

  2. Supplementary guides and usage regulations (§4, item 7)

Additionally, the user is obliged to abide by the following principles, guidelines, and usage regulations:

    • "Richtlinien zum Betrieb des Münchner Wissenschaftsnetzes" (MWN) - Operating guidelines of the Munich Scientific Network (MWN)
    • "Leitfaden zu ethischen und rechtlichen Fragen der Softwarenutzung" - Guide to ethical and legal issues for software usage
    • "Leitfaden zur verantwortungsvollen Nutzung von Datennetzen" - Guide to responsible usage of data networks
    • "Benutzungsordnung des DFN-Vereins zum Betrieb des Wissenschaftsnetzes" - Usage regulations of the DFN-Verein (i.e., German Research Network Association) for the operation of the Scientific Network
  3. Storage of project data (§5, item 1)

Information given to the LRZ at the time of application or extension of projects including related accounting data will be stored in machine-readable form by the LRZ and kept for at least two years.

All data stored by users on LRZ-owned storage media in connection with a project may be deleted by the LRZ six months after the end of the project.

  4. Fee regulations (§8, item 1)

Fees may be charged for usage of LRZ systems and of the Munich University Network, according to the LRZ fee regulations ("Gebührenordnung des Leibniz-Rechenzentrums"). The fees depend on the task group selected on the form "Antrag auf ein LRZ-Projekt" ("Project Application"). Fees will not be charged for tasks arising within the sphere of authorized institutions of higher education (§1, item 2b).

The costs for automatically registered nondurable materials (e.g., paper for printing and plotting) are also prescribed in the LRZ fee regulations and are valid for all task groups.

  5. Restricted usage of supercomputers (§8, item 2)

In conformity with the regulations of the US Export Office, members or organizations of some countries are not allowed to use US supercomputers. The same regulations are valid for supercomputers from Japan. Such restrictions are currently in force with respect to Iraq, Iran, Cuba, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.
