Preliminary remark
Network access via WLAN (wireless LAN) is possible in many areas of the Munich universities and high schools. In particular, WLAN offers all mobile users with a notebook or smartphone the opportunity to use MWN IT services wirelessly and, of course, also on the Internet.
Where can I use WLAN?
For a list of WLAN access points, including current utilization, go to http://apstat.lrz.de/AP_Statistik.html.
For Hochschule München there is a seperate overview at http://www.rz.hm.edu/kommunikations_dienste/wlan_vpn_zugang/wlan_1/wlanaccesspoints.de.html.
For the medical faculty of the LMU there is an overview for Großhadern at http://www.klinikum.uni-muenchen.de/Medizinisch-Administrative-Informationstechnologie/download/inhalt/servicebereich/wlan-abdeckung-grosshadern.pdf, for the hospitals in the inner city at http://www.klinikum.uni-muenchen.de/Medizinisch-Administrative-Informationstechnologie/download/inhalt/servicebereich/wlan-abdeckung-innenstadt.pdf.
WLAN coverage is being extended continuously to include, in particular, publically accessible areas, such as libraries, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, foyers, laboratories and open-air areas. WLAN will not (initially) replace hard-wiring in the office area.
The following sign indicates areas where WLAN is available:

At the LMU, the relevant signs are green.
What do I need to use the WLAN?
Wireless hardware
The computer needs an adapter for WLAN in IEEE 802.11g standard with 54 Mbps (megabits per second); this is supported at all access points. In addition, IEEE 802.11a (5 GHz) or the new standard IEEE 802.11n (5 GHz, up to 450 MBit/s) is available at some locations.
Software
To use the network lrz vpn is required, that needs the installation of (free for most systems) client software. To use eduroam mostly no extra software is needed.
Username
To use the WLAN, a valid username with VPN access rights (e.g. CampusLMU, Tum.de-username) is always required (with the exception of conferences).
Which wireless networks are available?
The WLAN access points used in the MWN can operate several wireless networks (SSID). In addition to the lrz main network, the eduroam network and a temporary, local con network (for conferences) are available. In addition, special institute networks are possible and, if required, the network administrator should contact the LRZ.
The eduroam network supports DFN roaming and, for users, this is generally easier to use than the VNP client required with lrz. For this reason, for first-time users, travelers and those experiencing problems with the VPN, we recommend the eduroam wireless network that works with encrypted transmission.
DFN roaming or the worldwide expansion under the name eduroam enables a user with a username, based at institute A, to use this username to log into the WLAN of institute B. To ensure that the user does not have to reconfigure the WLAN connection from A to B, the institutes that participate in DFN roaming have to offer the eduroam network in a standard configuration.
The following wireless network names (SSID) are available at the MWN:| Name (SSID) | Details |
| lrz |
( ) Use of the VPN client is obligatory as transmission is encrypted. (-) Requires the installation of the AnyConnect or IPsecVPN client from Cisco. (-) There is no free-of-charge VPN client for PDAs (Palm OS, Windows Mobile, pocket PC). (-) No eduroam / DFN roaming. |
| eduroam | (+) Encrypted transmission. (+) With the LRZ username, client software is not needed on many systems. (-) For some systems or without SIM username, requires the installation of client software. (+) For Linux, there is the free-of-charge wpa_supplicant, in more recent distributions, this is integrated in the network manager (+) Enables WLAN use, even at external locations ( ) The WLAN adapter has to support WPA2 encryption. (Not the case with very old devices)) |
| con | (-) Unencrypted transmission (-) Only available on request for conferences (+) No special configuration of the WLAN adapter required |
The computer has to be configured in accordance with the SSID selected.
For security reasons (no authentication), with the lrz and con SSIDs, communication between two clients via the access point is blocked, connections are only possible in the MWN or Internet (with lrz, via VPN).
How is the computer configured?
In addition to appropriate hardware, a valid username and the relevant password are required in order to access the network. The same usernames (LRZ/studentusernames/CampusLMU/Tum/RADIUSusernames) as for the VPN and modem/ISDN access to the MWN can be used. DFN roaming partners can use the username of their home institute.
The computer has to be configured in accordance with the SSID selected:
| SSID lrz | siehe VPN connection |
| SSID eduroam | siehe eduroam |
| SSID con | siehe event |
Where do I get help using WLAN access?
We have compiled FAQs for WLAN connections and VPN. If these do not help you further, contact our servicedesk (Tel. 35831-8800, https://servicedesk.lrz.de) and leave a description of your problem. A consultant will phone you back. To receive the required support, you must always specify the exact location or, even better, the name of the local access point; this always starts with “ap” and is displayed as the available WLAN network.
LMU students can contact the Helpdesk der LMU for help, and TUM students can contact the Helpdesk der TUM.
There are separate instructions for the medical faculty of the LMU.
There is also a separate Support page for the Munich University of Applied Sciences.
The WLAN in the Computer Science/Mathematics building of the TUM is not operated by the LRZ but by the System Administration Group. (rbg@in.tum.de)
Who do I contact to request more WLAN access points?
To request additional access points, the network administrator or institute director should email Mr. Reiser, reiser@lrz.de.
