VPN (IPsec) under Windows

The Cisco VPN client program for Windows can be installed under the systems Windows 98, 98SE, ME, NT4 (SP6a), 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 (only 32 bit). For 64-bit systems, you can only use the Anyconnect client. For systems with less than 256 MB main memory, please use version 4.0.5C.

Downloading the client software

Go to page https://www.lrz.de/services/netz/mobil/vpnclient and enter your username and password. Then click on To download page. A new page will appear. Click on the button Windows. Select a directory, e.g. C:\tmp and click on Save. From the same page, load the LRZ profile for an existing client (last but one link on the page), save the file lrz.pcf e.g. also in C:\tmp.

Installation

Close all (and this really does mean all) other applications as installing the client is more far-reaching than other program installations. Faults can occur quite easily.

Start Windows Explorer and unpack the file vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.03.0530-k9.exe (name is different with other versions) by double-clicking on the file name. Administrator rights are necessary for installation. After unpacking, installation starts automatically.

Caution: leave the pre-set installation directory as changing this can result in incorrect installation.

Confirm the next window with Next or Yes. A few more windows will be displayed and you will then be requested to restart the computer.

Import profile

After restarting, start the client by

Start->Programs->LRZ VPN client->VPN client. In the program window,

in the Connection Entries menu, select Import and select the location where you saved the lrz.pcf file you downloaded.

Establishing a connection

Click on the button Connect.

A window appears where you can enter your username and password.

Enter your username (seven-figure LRZ username, name@tum.de, name@campus.lmu.de or Radiususername@anderezone) and click OK.

After a few seconds, the window should disappear; the VPN connection has been established. However, you will see a small yellow symbol l   (padlock) in the tray area of the status bar (bottom right of the screen). Double-click on this symbol to reopen the client window at any time.

To terminate the VPN connection, right-click on the tray symbol and select Disconnect.

You will find further information in the help documentation integrated in the program (Menu Help, English) and in the LRZ FAQs at http://www.lrz.de/fragen/faq/#vpn.
