VPN under Windows Vista

This only applies for Vista without Service Pack 2: from version 5.0.05.290, you need a Microsoft kernel patch for Windows Vista before installation: Windows6.0-KB952876-x86.msu. The kernel patch can be downloaded from the following URL: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952876. To unpack, a password is required that is sent in the email with the Microsoft download link. With some email programs, characters in the password are interpreted as special characters ( ^ + 0 becomes °) and the password does not seem to work. Remedy: view the message source text. In Thunderbird, you can achieve this by pressing CTRL + U.

Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista already contains the patch.

Before installation, we recommend that you first backup the system, just in case something goes wrong during installation.

Installation and operation on Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise 6.0.6000 Build 6000 were tested successfully.

Caution: Cisco only offers the current client version for original Vista systems; updates from earlier system versions are not supported.
The current version of the client is available from the LRZ download page (https://www.lrz.de/cgi/netz/vpnclient/vpnclient). This is not a preconfigured installation program. This means that you have to get the lrz.pcf configuration file from the download page and import this into the client. Both the installation program and the client should be started with the option “Execute as administrator”.

  1. Recommended: read the troubleshooting tips Vista-VPN-Troubleshooting.txt.
  2. Recommended: backup the system or create a system restore point (Computer-Properties-Computer protection-Create)
  3. Download the VPN client and the profile file lrz.pcf.
  4. Install the VNP client with “Execute as administrator”.
  5. Start the VPN client with “Execute as administrator”.
  6. Import the lrz.pcf profile.
  7. Establish the connection.

Step-by-step instructions with images (not all windows are shown, the version number displayed may differ)

Downloading the installation program and the LRZ profile:

The VPN client can be downloaded under the following link: https://www.lrz.de/cgi/netz/vpnclient/vpnclient. The browser may issue a security prompt if the DFN and LRZ certificates have not been imported. (See also: http://www.lrz.de/fragen/faq/sicherheit2/)

The current version is 5.0.05.290 (as at 11.3.2009). This is the unmodified MSI-Installer from Cisco.

The installation program vpnclient-win-msi-VERSION.exe is saved and not yet executed as it would otherwise be started with insufficient rights. The following shows how you can execute the program as administrator. The storage location is assumed to be the “Desktop”.

Then load the LRZ profile from the same page (you will need this later).

Then right-click on the installation program on the desktop. A small selection menu opens; select the option “Execute as administrator”.

The following security prompt appears: select “Allow”.

Here, you have to click on “Unzip”. The installation program first unpacks the installation data in a temporary directory. After entering the language “English” (German is, unfortunately, not yet available), the Setup program is started.

The setup program installs the VPN client on the computer.

It might take much longer than indicated, particularly when installing the “Deterministic Network Enhancers”. Please be patient!

The program then notifies that installation has been successful.

This is followed by the obligatory system restart.

Create a link to automatic start with administrator rights (if the client does not start with normal user rights)

The installed client has to be started as administrator. In order to simplify this step, create a shortcut on the desktop. To do this, go to Explorer and open the directory “C:\Programme\Cisco Systems\VPN Client”, right-click on the program “vpngui.exe” and select the option “Create shortcut”.

The shortcut is created on the desktop.

You can now close the Explorer window. On the desktop, click on the vpngui.exe shortcut and select the option “Properties”. Another window appears. There, go to the “Shortcut” tab and click on “Advanced”.

In the “Advanced properties window, activate the option “Execute as administrator”.

The VPN client now needs the lrz.pcf profile containing the configuration data for access to the VPN server. Start the VPN client, click on “Import” and select the profile “lrz.pcf” you downloaded to the desktop earlier.

If you cannot see anything in the relevant folder, it could be because the known file extensions are not shown and the file is called lrz.pcf.txt and has to be renamed.

To establish a connection, click on “Connect” and enter your username and password in the authentication window that appears next.

You should now be able to access the VPN.
