Abstract
We need a test account in order to port our simulation code to the Hitachi. It is the ZEUS-3D code, which is a second-order explicit Eulerian code developped at the NCSA. Its parallelization is based on OpenMP.The scientific topic which we want to study with this code is the evolution of the interstellar medium in spiral galaxies.Observations of spiral galaxies show that the verticalvelocity dispersion of the gas in the disk varies radially from 12-15 km/sec in the central parts to 4-6 km/sec in the outer parts. Additionally, in the outer parts the velocity dispersion becomes nearly constant. On the other hand Supernovae explosion are believed to be the main source of energy input into the interstellar medium in spiral galaxies. In this project, we plan to investigate how the velocity dispersion of the gas in the interstellar medium depends on the supernova rate and supernova feedback efficiency. This study requires several simulations in order to investigate the parameter space.
